Some mechanical assembly hints for the http://diybookscanner.eu kit. Most of this also applies to the general http://diybookscanner.org design. These will eventually get merged into an updated assembly manual.

  • Have a look at the assembly videos by Dan Reetz on youtube. Also, http://youtu.be/NCfCGPMVyBI .

  • Hammers the wooden parts together with a heavy rubber hammer.

  • Hammering in the bearings quickly and evenly. Just hammer the bearing in a tiny bit, then turn the wooden part over. The bearings are now on the bottom side of the part, facing your work surface. Hit the wooden part with your hammer. The bearings will be pushed in much more easily and evenly.

  • If for whatever reason you need to drill a big hole entirely through the wooden parts, first clamp a piece of scrap wood to the bottom side. If you don't do that, you'll have wood splintering off the bottom side.

  • Use a few washers on the two 2.5cm 1/4" UNC screws to bolt the cameras to the frame.

  • When assembling the kit for use with Canon PowerShot A2200 or A3300 cameras, drill a 16mm diameter hole on the right edge of the linear camera UNC screw hole. Align the left side of the new hole with the right edge of the straight line hole. Align the bottom side with the bottom line of the camera UNC screw hole. TODO: picture.

  • Washers. The washers in the kit are not flat (on purpose). Assembling with the raised side towards the bearings. You might want to use two washers in most places instead of one as described in the original assembly manual.

  • Add felt pads to the end points of the lever mechanism.

Mounting the glass

  • Look at the inside of an aluminium bracket. You see six holes on one side.

  • Add felt pads on the other inside of the aluminium bracket, facing the holes. Leave 2mm space from the inside angle of the aluminium bracket. That leaves some place for the wooden rabbet edge. closeup: where to put the felt pad

  • Do the same for the other aluminium bracket. two aluminium brackets fitted with felt pads

  • Turn the imaging module so that the tip face upwards.

  • Cover the tips of parts 1 and 6 with the aluminium brackets without putting the glass in.

  • Draw dots on parts 1 and 6 through the holes in the aluminium brackets, 12 in total.

  • Drill the 12 dots: 3 mm wide screw holes approximately 12 mm deep.

  • Put the two glass panes onto the imaging module.

  • Put the aluminium brackets back in place.

  • Screw the aluminium brackets to parts 1 and 6 using the 16mm screws.

Handle assembly

  • Put two bearings into part n°9 if not present yet.
  • Put a 70mm M8 bolt through the bearings hole in part n° 9.
  • Screw two nuts onto the bolt.
  • Screw the plastic handle onto the bolt.
