Alternative software triggering
-
Spreads is a modular rewrite of the original triggering script in python. Source code can be found at http://github.com/jbaiter/spreads , the announcement at http://diybookscanner.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=2873 .
-
Ben Steinberg has written another alternative implementation for standalone use: https://github.com/bensteinberg/diy-bookscanner .

The ptp chdk extension makes these things possible.

The filewrite functionality of CHDK >=1.2 allows remote shooting and saving directly to the USB connected computer without the intermediate step of saving to the camera SD card. http://subversion.assembla.com/svn/chdkptp/trunk/USAGE.TXT -> remoteshoot.

In chdkptp, most of the remote capture logic is in lua. It's a bit convoluted due to the way the hooks in the camera firmware are implemented, but one could certainly implement it in C. If you look back at the remote shoot development thread, srsa's intitial implementation was in the C code, though the protocol changed a bit since then. I would actually like to split C ptp layer of chdkptp into a library at some point.

https://pypi.python.org/pypi/pyptpchdk/ does not (yet) directly support remoteshoot functionality?
