---------- The basics ---------- This library is intended as a means to allow active Firefox extensions to call window.eval in their content scripts even if a given page has specified a Content Security Policy (CSP) which disallows unsafe-eval. This is in the spirit of the CSP specification, which states that user addons are not meant to be beholden to CSP. Of course, addons using window.eval need to be fully aware of the security and other implications of its use, and should follow best practices to isolate themselves from the rest of the page script, as well as to only call window.eval on trusted (read: local!) code. Please note that this bypass can only work for pages that are loaded after the addon has been installed; users will need to reload any open tabs for the bypass to function on them. Also please note that this library is not discriminatory; it affects ALL active addons, not just yours. In practice this should not be a problem, but it is fully possible that this could uncover bugs in other addons which rely on being blocked by the CSP for some reason. ----- Setup ----- Place both of the UnsafeContentScriptEvals*.js files into the same directory in your addon and ensure that you run the background script before any other background scripts which will call window.eval: "background": { "scripts": [ "path/to/UnsafeContentScriptEvalsBackground.js", "myBackground.js" ] } You will also need to grant the webRequestBlocking permission: "permissions": [ "webRequest", "webRequestBlocking" ] ----- Usage ----- Your background scripts will gain access to two new functions: 1. UnsafeContentScriptEvals.allow(filters) Activates the unsafe-eval bypass for all addons for the given extension filters. For instance: key = UnsafeContentScriptEvals.allow({urls: ["<all_urls>"]}); The filters may be as specific as desired, but only the filters specified in the most recent call to allow() will be active. If you wish to run eval-like code not in a content script, but in a page script, then you will need to whitelist the call by adding a comment to its end with the key returned by the allow function: // in the background script let key = UnsafeContentScriptEvals.allow(); // in the page script let stringToEval = "console.log('test')"; eval(stringToEval + "//" + key); 2. UnsafeContentScriptEvals.useCSPDefaults() Deactivates all current bypasses, if you should need to toggle this behavior on and off. Once unsafe eval is allowed, your content scripts will be able to call window.eval in spite of the page's content security policy. This includes using window.eval as the content script loads, when it handles events, or when the background script calls the tabs.executeScript function. It is also possible to disable the sending of CSP reports when this library takes over CSP, by setting a configuration option on the background script before UnsafeContentScriptEvalsBackground.js loads: window.UnsafeContentScriptEvalsBlockReports = true; You can see examples of usage in the scripts bundled with this demo addon, myBackground.js and myContent.js. -------------- Technical Info -------------- In order to allow unsafe eval for content scripts even if a page's CSP disallows it, we have to monitor for CSP headers on main_frames and sub_frames, and add 'unsafe-eval' as needed to their script-src directive (the rest of the policy is left untouched). Of course, this would defeat the point of the page disallowing unsafe evals, and be a potential security risk. As such a content script is used to monitor for such violation manually, by overriding the default methods that can do an unsafe-eval and handling them as per the CSP spec (firing securitypolicyviolation events, logging warnings to the console with clean stack traces, and also sending violation reports if a report-uri directive requests them). It should be safe for multiple installed addons to use this library, as it is designed so that only one needs to be active for unsafe evals to be accessible to all of them. However, note that ALL active addons will be able to call window.eval, not just your own. This should not be a problem in practice, but if other addons rely on being blocked for some reason, they may encounter issues.
