Advanced User And Device Management

User And Device Management

OpenSTF comes with a very simple user and device management. There is no distinction between users and no limitations for the usage of devices per user. A user can acquire devices in a first-comes-first-serves-manner. It should be noted that it is possible to kick users from possessing a device. However, this is not a very convenient user and device management strategy. Overall, when working with a lot of devices and people you would like to have certain limitations and separations. Therefore, we introduced a user group and device group based management system:

Devices can be added to device groups and users can be added to user groups. A device can belong to several device groups and a user can belong to several user groups. Additionally, a limitation of actively used devices per user needs to be specified for a user group. A user group can be associated with multiple device groups. A user has access to the union of all associated devices in the corresponding device groups and is constraint by the maximum number of actively used devices of the belonging user groups.

A common scenario would be to create 'Staff' and 'Students' user groups. There is an 'Admins' user group by default. Users belonging to the 'Admins' user group don't have any limitations. Users belonging to the 'Students' users group have typically stricter limitations than users belonging to the 'Staff' group. Only users belonging to the 'Admins' user group are able to see and change these settings.
