K-MADe (Kernel of Model for Activity Description environment) is a tool for contributing to the incorporation of ergonomics into the interactive systems design process, through task and activity analysis. The originality of the tool is to be based on a model whose expressive power lies on a formal semantic. This facilitates task description and analysis, but also querying the model and migrating within models and software life-cycle steps.

The K-MADe tool is intended for people wishing to describe, analyze and formalize the activities of human operators, of users, in environments (computerized or not), in real or simulated situation; in the field, or in the laboratory. Although all kinds of profiles of people are possible, this environment is particularly intended for ergonomics and HCI (Human Computer Interaction) specialists in.
K-MADe makes it possible to create, edit and query models of users tasks. It is an environment resulting from ergonomics and IHM research, and intended to facilitate the implementation of a user-centered analytic perspective, according a model-based approach, for the design and the ergonomic evaluation of the interactive software.
Contributions to the integration of ergonomics to the process of design are in particular: to facilitate, by formal semantics and generic formats the description, the examination, and analysis of tasks; to limit the inter-individual variations; to increase the level of completion of descriptions; to authorize further the processing of descriptions, in particular the queries of the model; and to facilitate the paths between models of the field and the stages of the software lifecycle.
K-MADe can be used at the time of data collection in the field; during the analysis of user activities; during the validation of the models; etc. It can be also be used during the various phases of the development, for example: for the specification of hypothetical tasks models, to contribute with the design and the evaluation of usability as well as the drafting of documentation. K-MADe can also be considered to help the end-user in the form of task documentation, e.g., for training.
The K-MADe tool implements the whole set of the model characteristics. It makes it possible to edit, modify and question (the querying functionalities of the model are under development) the task models. The tool is available in French and in English and consists mainly of the following tools:

Graphic editor of K-MAD task models. Use of direct manipulation techniques for creating, modifying and removing tasks

Editor of tasks characteristics (see the list above). The editor works three ways. A reduced “light” way with only the characteristics considered to be most important, a way which lists in tables all the characteristics, and finally a form which shows in an organized form all task characteristics (precondition, tasks body and postcondition). This last representation is used for the printing of the full task

Editor of abstract objects, users, events and concrete objects. Possibility of adding, modifying and removing objects. The modification and removal of an object involves obligatorily a modification on the directly dependant objects

Tool for the editing of expressions for the preconditions, the postconditions and the iterations. The tool is capable to check if the grammar of an expression is correct

Simulator to animate models of K-MAD tasks

The initial work concerning task modelling for user interfaces (Scapin, 1988) had several objectives: to consider the way in which users represents their task, not the logic of the data-processing, or the “prescribed” task; to take into account the conceptual and semantic aspects, not only syntactic and lexical aspects; to obtain a structuring of the tasks in a uniform way; to carry out descriptions from a declarative point of view (state of things) as well as procedural (way of reaching these states); to allow parallelism and not only sequential representation(synchronization of the tasks); and to be computable.
From these first ideas and various requirements, a first task analysis model (“MAD”: Méthode Analytique de Description) was proposed (Scapin, D.L. & Pierret-Golbreich, C., 1989, 1990) at the intersection of ergonomics, computer science, and artificial intelligence. Moreover, the tool EMAD was developed (Pierret, C., Delouis, I. & Scapin, D.L., 1989); Delouis I., Pierret C., 1991).
In parallel, a method for task information gathering was defined (Sebillotte S., 1991); it consists mainly of semi-directed interviews based on the “Why?” “How?” technique. Also, one practical methodology of task analysis for extracting the relevant characteristics useful for the design of interfaces was also proposed (Sebillotte, S. & Scapin, D.L., 1994).
Since then the work has been continued according to an iterative process: development; for example: implementation of the model in an object oriented fashion, organization of the tasks at various levels of abstraction, validation in the field (house automation, management of ship fires, air traffic control, railway regulation, etc), modifications, validations again (further references are available upon request).
Research work (Gamboa-Rodriguez, F. & Scapin, D.L., 1997) also focused on the design and specification of interfaces. Two models were designed: a task model (MAD *) and a model for conceptual interface design (ICS), as well as procedures for moving from one model to the other, and links with the low level interface aspects (via the toolbox ILOG-Views). The work led to the implementation of the task analysis editor EMAD and to a software design environment (ALACIE).

Prototask is a new task model simulator, which does not visualize the task tree during the simulation. Prototask is a project initiated during the PhD of Thomas Lachaume.
Part of the K-MAD project, it leads on the K-MAD formalism, and allows users to run task models in a pseudo prototype way. Prototask encourage end-users and HCI designers to exchange around scenarios, in order to formalize the user needs.
