Synology Devices

Devices using Synology's DiskStation Manager software have a modified NUT server built-in that can be used to monitor a UPS attached to it. With some configuration, you can use WinNUT to monitor your DSM's NUT server.

Referring to the image below:

  1. Navigate to DiskStation's webui
  2. Open Control Panel
  3. Find the Hardware & Power section
  4. Open the UPS tab
  5. Make sure Enable network UPS server is checked, then click Permitted DistStation Devices
  6. Put in the WinNUT's client IP address, and click OK
  7. Finally click Apply (important!)

Note: If you have both IPv6 and v4 enabled on your network and DiskStation device, you may need to add all possible addresses on your host to the permitted DiskStation Devices list, including every IPv6 address assigned to your computer. You can determine what IP your computer uses to connect by using a network connection inspection tool, such as Process Explorer or netstat on your Diskstation.

Next, in WinNUT:

  1. Open the Settings menu.
  2. Put in the hostname or IP address of your DiskStation.
  3. The UPS name must be set to ups.
  4. Set login and password as upsmon for the username, secret for the password. If upsmon is not accepted, then monuser may work.
  5. Click OK, and it should connect.

Troubleshooting

I can't connect/get Access Denied errors.

Try using IPv4 only to connect. In the Permitted DiskStation Devices menu, make sure your PCs IPv4 address is in the list. In WinNUT, make sure the host is an IPv4 address. Make sure the username and password are entered correctly, and try swapping the username between upsmon and monuser. Make sure the UPS name is set correctly to ups. Try rebooting your Synology device and connecting again.
