With 'xCal' you can manage and display events in Joomla.

One modules is included: xcalendar, a calendar for showing scheduled events.

Each event can be enhanced by a googlemap, a poster and an attached file.

The event description will be written using the internal editor. 
The component lets you share events on facebook and twitter.
Users can subscribe for events and can be notifed by newsletters.

You can modify style.css for an easy way to customize the look of this component.
