Trader Gator is a simple stock trading application that initializes you with $5,000, allows you to purchase stocks at their current price, view your portfolio and its performance, and explore your transaction history. The application is built with a React frontend and Ruby on Rails for the API. The application uses live stock data from IEX Cloud. You can find the hosted application on heroku here:
Make sure you have Ruby, Bundler, NPM, and the Heroku Toolbelt installed. Go to the IEX Cloud website and signup for an account to access API keys. (For real live data, you need to pay but you can experiment with their Sandbox endpoint which services dummy data.) Set environment variables locally for "IEX_API_SECRET_TOKEN" and "IEX_API_PUBLISHABLE_TOKEN."
git clone [email protected]:heroku/trader-gater.git # or clone your own fork
cd trader-gater
bundle
rake start
(rake start runs heroku local -f Procfile.dev)
Your app should now be running on localhost:3000.
- Show more information about stock to the user, such as percent change, day high, etc.
- Allow the user to sell stocks at their new levels (high or low) to replenish their account
- Allow the user to refill their account in other ways (maybe connect a donation feature so if they donate $5 to charity, they get another $5,000)
- Add company logos to the interface
- Show the portfolio performance over time
- Create another data model for Portfolio, so portfolio is stored on the backend and users can have more than one portfolio and compare performance
