Technical Standards

This page collects a set of generalized technical standards the art team sets for themselves

Texel density

The Restock target minimum texel density is 200 px/metre. You need board approval to go below that. Small parts/areas of larger parts that need sharpness and visible text can go up to 300 px/metre. You need board approval to go above that!

Segment Counts

  • 0.625 to 3.75 m stack parts: 24 sides
  • 5.0 to 7.5 m stack parts: 36 sides
  • Hard-edged struts : 4 sides
  • Round-edged struts : 6 sides
  • Most wires : 6 sides

Polygon Counts

No real standards - but don't be ridiculous.

Object Counts

Generally we try to minimize object counts in order to reduce the number of draw calls in a scene. To that end, follow the following best practices:

  • Merge all objects sharing the same material, unless absolutely it is impossible
  • Use skinned meshes (bones and armatures) instead of large quantities of objects when animating complex objects (solar panels, lots of pistons, etc). Consider this approach if you start to see object counts >20 on a single part.
