The Field Book Wiki contains guidelines for Field Book development. For information about how to use Field Book, please see the user documentation.

Purpose

Field-Book is an open-source Android app for collecting data on field research plots. It is designed to provide a simple yet customizable digital interface for entering data while navigating between different plots and traits. By replacing paper or digital spreadsheets, it eliminates the need for data transcription and it reduces the risk of collection errors. It runs on a wide range of inexpensive hardware, allowing consumer-grade technology to be used in environments where cost and inflexibility have been limiting factors.

History

Field Book development began at Kansas State University in 2012 with a small award from the McKnight Foundation CCRP. An NSF award led to the creation of the PhenoApps project with a goal of developing different apps targeted to the unique data collection needs of plant breeders around the globe. Field Book has grown into a versatile phenotyping tool used by thousands of researchers across dozens of crops. The core team of developers now work in the Rife Lab at Clemson University, with a large community of contributors spread around the globe. We welcome contributions to any of the PhenoApps tools, including (Coordinate, Intercross, and Prospector).
