    • CTSM5.3 tag nearly ready, now shooting for Monday
  • Announcements & questions:

    • we should have long options for aerosols, ndep, etc for CRU-JRA forced runs that now go through 2022. Should we now extend (for a full year) or use SSP data?

Data Nugget (> 10 minutes):

Mahsa Khaneghahi (40 minutes):

  • Presents on work on snow and soil temperatures in NoahNP

Aug 29

Updates and Announcements (10 minutes)

    • ⭐ 300 ⭐ on the CTSM repo!
    • 4 tags in a week! Go Sam R, Sam L & Erik
  • Announcements:

    • Shooting for CTSM5.3 tag next week
    • Will have initial conditions and maybe historical results too!
  • Data Nugget:

    • CUPiD 'Key Metrics' look promising, hoping to build an LAI and ALT_Max page in too.

CTSM5.3

Aug 22

Updates and Announcements (10 minutes)

  • Welcome:

  • Wins:

    • Linnia provided suggested parameter files updates to reduce biases with CRUJRA
  • Announcements:

    • Last push before code freeze with initial conditions for CTSM5.3 tag to be made soon, see LMWG-dev.
      • Integrates minor updates to surface datasets with new fire code + parameterizations informed by CLM5 PPE.
      • Will not be compatible with CLM5.2 tags.
    • Developing an "online textbook" for running different flavors of single point cases. Talk to Will & Danica if you want to learn more, contribute or test this out.

CSL proposal

  • LMWG allocation: 23 M core hours / year, 46 M hours total

  • CMIP7 DECK experiments covered by CESM.

  • Additional MIPS need to be covered by WGs

  • Current costs for CESM3 are estimated here. Briefly costs range wildly between:

    • Coupled model (Mid-top with ne30 grid and ocean BGC) 14000 PE-hrs/yr (12 y/day)
    • Land only spinup (1 degree, f09 grid BGC-Crop) 280 PE-hr/yr (160 yr/day).
    • Land only historical (1 degree, f09 grid BGC-Crop) 640 PE-hr/yr (72 yr/day). Hopefully this gets better...
  • For round numbers, the means that for a 300 year simulation (without spinup) we're looking at:

    • 4.2M PE hours for a fully coupled model and
    • 200K PE hours for a land only simulation

Let's fill out this sheet with experiments we think we'd like to request

Authorship discussion, expectations, and norms

Aug 8

Joint with PPE meeting

  • Linnia walked through these slides
  • Emphasized there will be more opportunities to provide input on the experimental design, parameters, tuning targets, etc.

Aug 1

Felix Jaeger gives an update on his work.

July 25

Updates and Announcements (10 minutes)

  • Welcome:

  • Wins:

    • Yifan got a job an SUNY-Buffalo
    • FATES-LUH2v2 on main, allowing for transient FATES cases.
    • MatrixCN tag made, closing out a PR from Feb 2019!!! (Yay, queue Hallelujah chorus... led by Erik)
    • Will and Liz have been married 20 years, family survived the 4 pass loop! (Erik added exclamation points!)
  • Announcements:

    • Aleya is hiring a postdoc with the NOAA Global Monitoring Lab, posting here
    • CMEPS has capability to run land and atmosphere on different grids
      • NorESM will likely use this capability
      • Suggesting CESM will not, which means we need to support post processing tools for CESM3 in CUPiD
      • Erik Note: although this capability exists we have NOT used nor tested it in CESM in quite some time there aren't grids for it now
