In a recent paper (Ferretti et al, 2024) it was demonstrated that when sequence data on a phylogeny is generated with site rates independently drawn from a continuous gamma distribution, the commonly used discretised gamma rate heterogeneity model using 4 categories (Yang, 1996) over estimates branch lengths, while the free-rate model (Soubrier et al, 2012) does not suffer from the same problem. | ||
