We need a year range slider with a histogram showing the relative number of hits per year. Something like:

More detailed notes are in Figma, but briefly:

smallest bin (bar) should be 5-6px with 2px between each, up to 50 results. Anything less than 5 bins should hide the histogram automatically
we could merge bins if there are too many results (over 50), starting with 1 bin per year, then merging 2 per year, etc.
if there are merged bins, the color should be ucd-blue-70 (#73ABDD)
