Describing biomes is an interesting challenge. So far, I've decided that biomes should have three axes of description; the first two are temperature and moisture. The third is undecided for now, because it depends strongly on what biome information is used for.

I found two charts that might be useful for encoding biome information.

This one uses two axes to describe biomes.

This graph is far more detailed; could probably use this as an optional second method, or for creating more interesting and dynamic simulations.
