Dark mode toggle working only when system is light mode

Describe the bug
When my system in light mode, clicking the toggle for the dark mode works well. However, when the system is set in dark mode by default, the toggle simply works erratically.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Set system in dark mode
2. Click 'button' to toggle mode
