Groovy Macroses don't work (like $artifact)

The example groovy pom contains an example of $artifact macros.
Unfortunately, this feature doesn't work probably because the corresponding code is commented out.

I am inclined to remove the example and the code .. objections? Or someone wanting to send a PR that implements this?
