SecurityContextHolder setAuthentication is unused?

I would like to ask why we need this:

SecurityContextHolder.getContext().setAuthentication(authentication);

@PostMapping("/authenticate") method returns only header from controller. Is there any reason of above line? If not, can we remove it?
