Can't set media_folder per post properly

My content tree:

It allows me to add and store images next to a post (Hugo page bundle), but they do not display correctly in Sveltia CMS. For example, I can't select another image from the same collection for the cover image.

I think the problem is probably in the media_folder path, because Sveltia CMS doesn't see the images partially. I tried using {{slug}} but it doesn't work. I can see the cover image in the post preview, so I think public_folder is fine. The problem is that I can't change the image because "select image" doesn't include anything from the current collection, only from the general media folder, not the specific collection.

Please help me set this up correctly.

I see some issues as you mentioned.

• Can’t select another image from the same collection: This is expected behaviour, because the media folder is entry-specific. If you want to use an image multiple times, you need to upload it to the global media folder.
  • But... I’ve just realized that the Asset Library somehow shows all these “orphaned” entry-specific images in one place. So, for your convenience, I’ll fix the Select Image dialog to let you select any image from the same collection.
• Image not displayed after saving an entry and opening it again: The editor (left) pane only; the preview (right) pane shows the image properly. I’ll fix it.

My quick fix is working locally but needs some more test. And I need to change the behaviour mentioned in the README:

Assets stored in an entry-relative media folder are automatically deleted when the associated entry is deleted because these assets are not available for other entries109. When you’re working with a local repository, the empty enclosing folder is also deleted.

I meant that I have a post and two images inside one folder. After a while I wanted to change lion.jpg to zoo.jpg. I can't see either of them through Select Image. I don't expect to be able to use images from post-2 in post-1, but I do expect to be able to use any images from post-1 in post-1 (and global ones, of course).

If I delete a post that contains some assets, I expect those assets to be deleted as well. By the way, in Decap CMS you can delete a post, then create another one with the same slug (identical folder), and it will contain all the images from the previous one, but without direct access to the files it's impossible to know. The same thing happened to me when I was recording the screencast, I had to re-record it. I think just deleting the entire folder makes more sense.

BTW, I recorded three screencasts especially since I don't have much experience, it could just be my configuration error or an oblique explanation.

1. How Sveltia works now

In a nutshell, you can add images (assets) to the same post folder, but you won't be able to see them in the asset interface when editing a post in Sveltia CMS itself. Global Asset Manager finds them somehow anyway.

2. My unsuccessful experiments with media_folder / public_folder

I tried everything and got the menu item "Collection Assets" in the "Select Image" popup. Then I thought maybe I just configured something wrong. In fact, I just created another global folder with assets (test) in the root folder of my site. That's why I thought there might be a way to point to the folder containing the post itself, the same like Decap CMS. Separate menu item where you can see the assets that belong to that particular post (Collection Assets subitem).

3. How Decap CMS works

Images are only available when editing a post, not globally visible, but at least you can add and modify images directly from the CMS. It's not perfect, but it is something.

Yes, I was thinking about how to refer to cover.png from post-1, not just lion.jpg and zoo.png. Your case is probably simple; the saved value would be ../post-2/cover.png, but sometimes it would be complicated depending on the CMS configuration or the framework/server configuration that trims the trailing slash from the URL.

So, as you described, I’ll try to simply show lion.jpg and zoo.png in post-1.

By the way, Sveltia CMS still has a problem: unsaved images, which are labelled “Draft” in Decap CMS, are not displayed in the Select Image dialog. I’ll tackle the issue later.
