displaying record-type signals in gtkwave

here's the set of signals that gtkwave enumerates for neorv32_uart0:

notice that the (record-type) signals ctrl, rx_engine, tx_engine, rx_fifo, and tx_fifo are NOT listed here!!!! it seems gtkwave only shows scalar or array signal....

looking at the underlying .vcd produced with ghdl, i find that these (record-type) signals are not even supported:

$comment ctrl is not handled $end
$comment tx_engine is not handled $end
$comment rx_engine is not handled $end
$comment rx_fifo is not handled $end
$comment tx_fifo is not handled $end

any thoughts on how to get visibility into record-type signals -- which are used almost everywhere in the VHDL sources????

this is fairly easy.... the .vcd format doesn't support records....

the solution is to use the ghdl --wave=dump.ghw option and then invoke gtkwave dump.ghw....

the only "minor" problem is that the names of these signals are NOT qualified with some unique path:

but then i guess this is problem if you have two different scalar signals of the same name inside different modules....

actually, there is a way to display each signals position in the hierarchy
