with two types:

  1. offset from a regular beat (for "humanising" rhythms)
  2. regular beat is lost (for really random events)

Possibly have two types of variation: one keeps underlying beat intervals constant (to make it more human sounding); the other just acts as a Poisson process (or something like that)
