Retrieve Jira issues for a specific Jira project

Is there a way to extract a sub-set of Jira issues?

Concrete I would like to extract the issues of a specific project, maybe also filtered on issue type. The most flexible way I could think of would be to use a JQL which would define the set of items to retrieve.
