This is an umbrella issue to group all changes regarding the metadata API.

Split necessary and optional metadata, fetch only necessary by default: Move non-critical metadata out of Session #595
Metadata is not refreshed on SchemaChange event: Refresh schema metadata on schema-changing event #546
Make sure fetched metadata is consistent: Metadata fetched may be inconsistent #1009
