The Rust core team has been tasked with setting up the foundation, but as I understand it will the core team will be a different entity from the foundation board. I'd like to understand how these two entities will relate to each other since from the outside they seem quite similar.

  • What are examples of tasks that are the core team's responsibility?
  • What are examples of tasks that are the foundation's board's responsibilities?
  • How will the core team and foundation communicate? Who calls the shots on what?
  • Perhaps more specifically: what if the board and the core team disagree. What power do they hold over the other in case or conflict?
  • How many seats (?) will the core team make up on the board? How many people from other teams will have a seat on the board? Which restrictions do the bylaws stipulate?
  • How are the positions on the board and on the core team be linked? What happens when someone steps down from either the board or the core team (by choice or otherwise)?

Good questions! Some of them are kind of covered by other “FAQs”, so let me start with those:

  • It’s not exactly what you asked for, but in What's the relationship between the project and the foundation? #18 we discussed the relationship of the project and the foundation.
  • Regarding the structure of the foundation, there are more details in the FAQ. I don’t think we want to go into specifics like how many seats there will be until the by-laws are finalized, but what I will say is that the project will have a strong voice in the foundation’s board (see this FAQ question for more details).

What is not covered by those questions is details about the role of the core team specifically. We’re not going to have time to write out a response during this period, but we’ll draft something and follow up, perhaps in a blog post. =)

That's understandable — thanks for the responses so far!
