• Hatchling plugin now available

  • Rational of using scikit-build-core as a hatchling plugin:
    • Mature builder with all of options providing more flexibility to structure the project along with possibility to write plugins. Sensible to use for python projects having a few compiled extensions.
    • If project is mostly compiled code, is is sensible to directly use scikit-build-core build backend
  • In the future, we will look into updating the https://github.com/scientific-python/cookie to provide more flexibility along with offering a way to use scikit-build-core as hatchling plugin
  • See hatchling-pybind11-hello sample project

• Ninja generator on windows

  • Will look into improving the developer experience ensuring the Visual Studio "environment" is automatically set if selecting Ninja on windows.

• Support for C++ libraries distributed on PyPI

  • Momentum toward improving support by adding mangling support directly in CMake
  • Few other idea:
    • one package per version
    • dynamic metadata plugin ensuring the required version the one that is built with
  • There is also https://peps.python.org/pep-0725/
    • Specifying external dependencies in pyproject.toml
