Can we have an option or workaround to get the number of modes based on the upper limit of eigenvalue instead of specifying the number of modes?

FYI, this project is maintained-only, not actively-developped. I guess the answer is unfortunately no.

Is there other free software that can do that?

Check out eigen3 or slepc.
