StackStorm lesson stages 3 and 4 fail to initialize

The progress indicator sits for an extended period of time (around 50 seconds) at the last stage of loading, then the modal "window" displays this text: "Error while waiting for lesson to initialize: Livelesson encountered errors during provisioning. See syringe logs"

The message "Livelesson encountered errors during provisioning. See syringe logs" is also logged in the browser console. I see a message "Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 500 ()" referring to /syringe/exp/livelesson/15-9bdujsmzv01brq3s:1 right before it

Sometimes though these stages do initialize properly, but success rate isn't very high
