This is a task associated with the charter epic #7

Which mapping tool or framework do you want to introduce to our Working Group?

Simple Standard for Sharing Ontological Mappings (SSSOM)

Why do you think this mapping tool or framework is relevant in the context of our working group?

Pros:

  • It provides an easy format to write mappings as TSV files with additional headers in which important provenance metadata is stored.
  • It seems to become an open standard to share mappings.
  • It can be incorporated into ontology or knowledge graph build pipelines using other tools such as ODK or OAK.

Cons:

  • it can only be used to represent 1:1 mappings
  • TSV format might be hard to read & edit in some contexts --> could be addressed by an ability to export to SSSOM in mapping editors like COCODA

What further steps are needed to be done or discussed by/in our WG regarding this mapping tool?

  1. present SSSOM as a flash talk in one of our WG calls see comment below
  2. evaluate which of our uses cases can be covered by SSSOM
  3. find WG consensus on how to recommend SSSOM
  4. write recommendation on how to use SSSOM within NFDI (relate to other issues and WGs)

Within the 8-5-2024 meeting we discussed that having a flash talk about SSSOM might not be needed as there is so much documentation already available online (e.g. "Resources for users" sections in its docs ). It would thus be best if all WG members could consult these resources and write down any open questions here, so we can address and discuss them more concretely in some upcoming call.
