Can I create samples from more than one template in my study?

I am not sure this is a valid use case, so please take this with a grain of salt :).

In my study, I want to add a second sample, but my intention is to add a sample with a different template than the one I selected for my study. I can't seem to figure out how to add a second template nor select a different template for my different sample.

here's what I tried:

• in the study screen window - click the "search" icon thinking that would possibly bring me up a search interface for another template to add
• touched on "new" in the study screen window under sample - didn't find anywhere to put in a new template. touched 'back' and now I have a "no sample name" sample.
• touch on the "no sample name" sample, tried to touch "Too many fields?" thinking that it might take me to a template selector, but nothing happened. realized that this was actually a text note and then went over and touched "customize list" text (which looks the same as the "Too many fields" text) which gave me the full list (I think) for the template I originally selected?

This is a limitation imposed by the portal backend at the moment. However, that will be changing shortly. The following issues track changes to the portal and the app, respectively, which will allow a study to be associated with multiple environmental templates:

• Add ability to select multiple sample type environment nmdc-server#1367
• Account for changes to packageName field on backend #177

Once the changes for those two issues are deployed you will be able to select, say, both water and soil for a single study. In that case when you attach a new sample to that study the app will ask you whether you'd like to use the water or soil template for that sample.
