Point of Sale Module

Currently users of Medusa get a great admin and frontend e-commerce experience. However for their on-premises instore purchases it could be improved.

I imagine a plugin which provides a point of sale dashboard for stores.
The dashboard will a simplified version of the e-commerce frontend. Consisting of a list of products, always visible cart side bar and maybe filters/categories for easy searching for specific products.

Staff members would click the product and it gets added to the cart. Staff member checkouts and using either custom configuration or stripe terminal, connect to the card reader to accept in store payment.

Medusa has the building blocks already with products and cart functionality already built, work would need to be made for connecting to card readers (stripe terminal I think works best)

What do other people think, something to consider for the roadmap?

We've recently collaborated with an agency around building a POS for in-store purchases, and it shipped with more or less the requirements you've specified here.

I will reach out to them to hear if they'd be interested in sharing, if not the product, then hopefully the architecture and general description of the implementation specifics.

Perhaps, this could provide the basis for a community-led effort toward building it.

Great blog posts, but I would love to see a native POS integration in medusa.js in the near future, for retailers and all SMBs, accept customer payments (cash, cards, digital wallets, etc.) Link customer accounts to get rewards, receipts, inventory, promotions and much more!

I have analyzed this case from plugin perspective and because of integration to terminals, unfortunately it is not simple.
I am wondering if there will be any need of having it as a plugin, but without payment (so only cash acceptance or manual acceptance with terminal).
From what I understand the scenario looks like:

• new sidebar options called PoS
• PoS page will show list of all products (variants)
• after clicking a product it will be added to card
• when everything is ready, order is placed
• staff member changes order that is paid and completed (after receiving cash or by looking at the terminal)
• order is completed and we see again list of all products

I have a feeling that it is most straightforward scenario, which can be implemented, but I am not sure if people are looking for such thing.
What would be missing is (I guess)

• terminal integration
• scan of bar codes

Any comments to that?

We (in our two stores) are used to typing the amount manually on our payment terminal. We are using Lightspeed now, which offers a payment integration but we chose not to use it (more expensive operators).

What is pretty common in stores is handling cash registers. Opening the register with a certain amount of cash and closing that register with some tally. The total value of cash transactions - the refunds paid + the starting count would be the total daily cash sum. Knowing that would allow for calculating gaps in cashflow.

Gift cards are also a must in our store, but I suppose that depends on each scenario.

Hey, Yes you are correct on your assessment that adding a terminal adds the complexity. However what I originally thought was to add the stripe terminal integration. This would allow for a standardised interface to use Stripes card readers. Barcodes as you suggest and inventory management would be the other features required. Kind regards, Bernard

Well a plugin for stripe terminal would be one way of breaking it into modular components. I feel though that a full POS requires a payment interface to be classified as a POS. Adding a few pieces of functionality which I think would be needed (or useful):

• Receipt printing based on an order
• Managing returns in another way than from the order details page: Lightspeed allows you to scan a receipt for example, which will then allow you to select the items to return etc.
• Managing cashflow: opening cash register, closing cash register with count, adding or removing cash from the register
• Gift cards: the admin endpoint for creating a draft_order does not allow for gift cards to be used atm (nice to have)
• Some form of store analytics (nice to have)

Receipts, cashflow management and gift cards are a must for our stores, but that might differ for each retailer.

Yes I agree with your suggestions.

I haven't thought of the cash register, I assume it would be more difficult since we do not have control of the actual cash register machines. There would be a bit more complexity in supporting it. But it should be considered.

Gift cards and loyalty programs are nice to have and ideally they would be a plugin which integrates into medusa and our POS system.
Store analytics as well could be plugin.

The cash register is actually quite simple, in terms of connection. A receipt printer sends a signal to the register to open. This happens when an order receipt is printed. Print settings are usually device managed, so no work to do there. At least for Lightspeed and Shopify it works like this. It does require a neat looking receipt though :-)

Not all employees need full access to all data. Store managers need some more access than clerks for example.

Handling payments in Point of Sale module

I am trying to figure out how I can best handle payments from a point of sale module. I could use your input on this question since my Medusa knowledge is fairly limited.

Scenario 1:
As far as I understood, there is no admin API available out of the box that allows an admin to create a payment session. The store API does have an endpoint to create a payment session here: POST Create Payment Session. In this scenario, I would use the Store API (which might be a bit cheeky), to create a payment session with custom payment providers being cash or card. I could also see if there is a possibility to add an admin API to create payment sessions, but I am not sure how to integrate that in Medusa.

Scenario 2:
The admin API however offers this method: POST Mark Paid . This endpoint would allow to mark a draft order as paid. Using the draft order Mark Paid flow, I can create orders from the Point of Sale module, but I lose out on information around how an order has been paid for. As a starting point, this could work though as it allows me to create orders and handle payments manually.

The big question:
For proper cashflow management, I do think having some link to payment methods would be required. I can work with scenario 2 for the time being, but what would a solid implementation of scenario 1 look like?

I might move the POS module out of Medusa, into a separate storefront consuming Medusa's Store APIs.

The only 'problem' I foresee here is that Store and Admin APIs will be used in the same application. I need the admin APIs for managing swaps, returns and claims for example. I need the Store APIs for managing carts and payments.. Any thoughts on this matter @BernardMcWeeney @radoslaw-sz?

I do not see an issue of using Store API and Admin API in one plugin. Person who sells can be just treat as customer (at least in a proof of concept).
For cash payment you can use already used Manual Payment from NextJs starter.

Cash payments I see as been the most easy to implement but I believe integrating the Stripe Terminal APIs into Medusa would be the greatest challenge but one that would benefit I belelive more people.

yes, if you are using medusajs admin with backend you need to create a new widget for vendor login, but if you have separated admin then there is easy way to do this.

Unfortunaly, right now I cannot give any opinion, I have no that much experience with Medusa.
