In almost all cases, I tried to use a layout that was as true to the original gamepad (such as swapping B and A for SNES/NES controllers). I am open to suggestions on better layouts (please submit an issues ticket). On the subject of letting the user pick, each emulator is unique, and there is no "blanket" configuration, since some use A for this action, and another may use A for another. I figured a nice layout explanation would be just as effective.
Please refer the layouts listing on the gamepad wiki page for what buttons do what for a given controller. I broke this out to each controllers own page due to sheer size of what it was becoming.
