Having a single layer diagram has the problem of how granular to make your diagrams. Too high level and you can't dig into details or too many details and it is hard to understand high level relations.
Creating multiple diagrams for different levels of a system is ok but jumping between them is not smooth, since diagrams don't share the same space.
I think would be great to experiment with some kind of multi-scale diagram where you can dig from high level architecture diagram to sub machines details by only using your zoom tool.
