The behaviour I would expect when doing a merge(`{"a": 1}`, null) would be to get {"a": 1} as a result, as null, is a valid JSON object.
merge(`{"a": 1}`, null)
{"a": 1}
null
Or at least it works like that on the site: https://jmespath.org
