Is this normal for a "first use"?

I don't feel like this is a bug, but a "skill issue" on my part.
This is what I see when I run lazyvim:

I can navigate ok, but I was expecting the panels to show together (as seen in the readme), not full-window. I have also tried making my terminal full screen, but nothing. I did find the + keybind which helps, but I'd like it to show up immediately.

I tried pasting the dafault config into mine, but lazygit fails to open and returns to the prompt immediately. After a little playing around, this is my current config:

I have a few other issues (like hanging on "stage all"), but I'll search more myself before asking (also going off-track for this Q&A).

I'm using Windows and have manually set $env:XDG_CONFIG_HOME = "$HOME/.config" in my profile (so my nvim and lazygit configs follow linux paths (for my own sanity since I use both Linux and Windows and keep my dotfiles the same between them)

This is caused by the windowSize: 'full' option that you set. You get what you asked for. 😄 Remove this and it will look "normal".

I recommend to only set those config options that you want to change.

unfortunately, windowSize is doing nothing. full, normal, half and no custom config result in the same view from the screenshot.

In that case I can only suspect that you are editing the wrong config file. Maybe XDG_CONFIG_HOME isn't really doing what you want, I can only guess here.

From within lazygit, type 1 e to open the config file that it is actually using.

Wait, are you calling lazygit with an argument, e.g. lazygit status? In that case it will always start in full-screen mode, seems like this is hard-coded.

The repo I'm using right now is my dotfiles bare repo.
cd-ing into another repo and calling lazyvim without parameters works fine

It does, but it needs arguments in my case (as seen here: #1201 )

Ah, ok. What's your exact command line for the bare repo? #1201 has several different suggestions.
