The current version of the viewer uses True Color (32-bit: 8 bits for each colour and 8 bits for the alpha) to display the images. In some cases more precision is needed for this display and Deep Color (30/36/48-bit per pixel) could be used. Regular screens mostly use true colour, deep colour necessitates special screens.
As of today, there is one initiative from the Web Incubator Community Group (WICG) to allow the HTML canvas to support this display: Canvas Color Space. This initiative seems stale, not sure if it is still under review. If anyone has more information, they would be welcome!
