Revising descenders >opsz18 #49
Comments
—Shortening from default -208 to -155
This overall seems good to me - but what is the rationale for shortening descenders? :) |
Fitting more lines vertically w/out end users resorting to parametric axis.

Great! Let's do it :) |
Somewhere I have an article or brochure about Monotype’s short descender variants, intended for bibles and financial pages. In fact my very first book (given to me at my Christening at 5 months old) is set in agate/ruby Plantin with short descenders. Printing credit: Vivian Ridler at Oxford University Press, Ruby 32mo edition. |
There are much more excessive uses of short descenders, including the two that you point out, I'll save money for Saint Peter Bibles, for small advert publishers, and for Sinoization of Latin. If someone wants to make named instances of any of the design space, in particular the text end for less expensive ad short or book long modifications, we have included that range in YTDE. |
A preliminary look at the latin english and values for shortening descenders.
opsz 18 is left alone. opsz144 is shortened more, sizes in between shortened in between 144 and none.
