How does wait for work?

I am not sure, if I understand correctly, till when waitFor is waiting.
waitFor( async () => !((await $("#thisID").exists()) && (await $("#thisID")?.isVisible())), 30000 );

Am I right, that the code continues if element with id = thisID does not exist, or if exists is not visible? Or after 30 s.
