At the moment, we seem to return a 503 pretty easily. Better fix this, please!

@4f4231046ccb6 appears to have improved timeouts and error reporting, but more extensive testing would be great before we close this bug. Also, we don't actually report errors at the moment: we only report no-matches, which is "good enough" (but an HTTP 500 would be a bad idea, wouldn't it?) This would require quite a bit of rewriting, so I'm shelving this for now.
