Having seen https://zbib.org/ , I wonder if we should be trying to collaborate with the Zotero team

I think would this would be most effective for end-users :-)
A few issues related to software to it already:

ZBib background: zotero/zoterobib#106.

Nice side experiment, IMHO. Possible a useful prototype, if software-related can updates be implemented more readily there than in CSL or Zotero core.
