The symlink script suffers from the assumption that it can go out of maintenance mode with

mv .htaccess.bak .htaccess

That will fail if the site didn't have a .htaccess to begin with — leaving the site in an unusable state. This can happen when a previous run of wpsible -t symlink was interrupted with ^C. (Normally all WordPresses have a .htaccess)
