I would like to comfortably fix typos or reword messages, one-by-one as I inevitably miss them over and over again, without spamming the notifications of recipients.
Why would you like to do it?
Everyone is getting mad at me for spamming their notifications because I spot typos in previous messages, or realize I was wordy and can reduce the verbosity of the message. But this results in spamming the notifications of the recipients which ends up being a bigger bother.
How would you like to achieve it?
Minor Edit
When editing a message, I think there should be a checkbox at the bottom that indicates if it will notify participants.
Possible examples could be like Slack or Wikipedia:
Imagine this says: "Notify receipients of the edit"
Or once again, referencing Slack. The Send button could have a drop down on it with "Send without notification"
Editors can mark an edit as minor, which indicates that it's a superficial change and shouldn't require review.
Add "Message edits in …" to Notification Settings
This could be a user setting instead, where instead of the editor determining if the message should notify, the receiver can configure if they want to be subscribed to message edit events.
Have you considered any alternatives?

Additional context
A potential mock up of what a checkbox might look like. Wording depends on what you want the default behavior/state to be.
