This document describes the Web Standard for Widgets, which is a set of guidelines for creating and using widgets. Widgets are small, self-contained applications that can be embedded in a web page. They are typically used to provide additional functionality to a web page, such as a calendar, a weather forecast, or a news ticker.

The Web Standard for Widgets is based on the following principles:

Openness: The Web Standard for Widgets is open and free to use. Anyone can create or use widgets that conform to the standard.

Extensibility: The Web Standard for Widgets is extensible. This means that new widgets can be added to the standard without affecting existing widgets.

Compatibility: The Web Standard for Widgets is designed to be compatible with existing web technologies. This means that widgets can be used in web pages that are created using standard web technologies.

The Web Standard for Widgets is a work in progress. We welcome feedback and suggestions for improvement. Please contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions or comments.

The Web Standard for Widgets defines the following API:

The `Widget` interface: This interface represents a widget.

The `WidgetManager` interface: This interface represents a widget manager.

The `WidgetRegistry` interface: This interface represents a widget registry.

The `Widget` interface defines the following methods:

`init`: This method is called when the widget is first created.

`update`: This method is called to update the widget.

`destroy`: This method is called when the widget is destroyed.

The `WidgetManager` interface defines the following methods:

`createWidget`: This method is called to create a new widget.

`getWidget`: This method is called to get a widget by its ID.

`destroyWidget`: This method is called to destroy a widget.

The `WidgetRegistry` interface defines the following methods:

`registerWidget`: This method is called to register a widget with the registry.

`getWidgetById`: This method is called to get a widget by its ID from the registry.

`unregisterWidget`: This method is called to unregister a widget from the registry.

Widgets should be sandboxed to prevent them from accessing or modifying data outside of their own scope.

Widgets should be signed to verify their authenticity.

Conformance requirements are expressed
with a combination of descriptive assertions
and RFC 2119 terminology.
The key words “MUST”, “MUST NOT”, “REQUIRED”, “SHALL”, “SHALL NOT”, “SHOULD”, “SHOULD NOT”, “RECOMMENDED”, “MAY”, and “OPTIONAL”
in the normative parts of this document
are to be interpreted as described in RFC 2119.
However, for readability,
these words do not appear in all uppercase letters in this specification.

All of the text of this specification is normative
except sections explicitly marked as non-normative, examples, and notes. [RFC2119]

Examples in this specification are introduced with the words “for example”
or are set apart from the normative text
with
class="example"
,
like this:

This is an example of an informative example.

Informative notes begin with the word “Note”
and are set apart from the normative text
with
class="note"
,
like this:

Note, this is an informative note.

Conformant Algorithms

Requirements phrased in the imperative as part of algorithms
(such as "strip any leading space characters"
or "return false and abort these steps")
are to be interpreted with the meaning of the key word
("must", "should", "may", etc)
used in introducing the algorithm.

Conformance requirements phrased as algorithms or specific steps
can be implemented in any manner,
so long as the end result is equivalent.
In particular, the algorithms defined in this specification
are intended to be easy to understand
and are not intended to be performant.
Implementers are encouraged to optimize.
