Can I change _home.scss?

Hi! I'm fairly new to Hugo, so I apologize if this is a very silly question... But hear me out:

I was looking for ways to add an image/logo/whathaveyou, to the index page and I ran into Ben Chapman's Ability to add a site logo? #205 issue. Didn't work for me because of these lines of code on the _home.scss

    }

And

    height: 1.5rem;
    padding: 0 .25rem;
  }

The _override method wouldn't work. Maybe I'm too green, but there was no way for me to override the shape, size or anything related to the avatar. By changing height, adding weight and deleting some lines I was able to add an image and have control over that part of the theme.

Maybe I'm able to help Ben with his own issue, but I'm not sure if I am allowed to make those changes. I'm also fairly new to coding and I wouldn't like to be disrespectful in any way.
