The documentation is based on (slightly outdated) information found on wowdev Wiki and CascLib source code.

CASC storage and NGDP

Since 2014, all recent Blizzard games have moved from an outdated MPQ storage format to CASC (Content Addressable Storage Container). This change was also reflected in their content distribution system, which is now called NGDP (Next Generation Download Protocol) and allows for a more efficient patching process.
