I met up with a local journalist a few weeks ago to show them the existing site and see what they would need for it to be useful in their coverage. Here are the top level notes I took from that meeting:
Overall, very positive! They said that this tool is already super useful for what they cover and that it reduces how much work it took them to pull the data in the first place.
Some room for improvement:
Mixing ballot measure campaign cash with candidate committees is confusing such as for Darrell Steinberg
Using the committee names instead of just the ID numbers would be better for comprehension
Linking to SoS is kind of confusing because the data isn't actually there - it's just where the committees have to register before they report to the city/county.
Various time periods would be useful, would be interesting to see who took money from people in 2016 and not 2020
Wants to download the CSV by person and not by body or election
Including independent expenditures is super valuable
