I tested the code on a Raspberry Pi Model 4 with the 64-bit OS (Debian Bullseye) installed. I received a "libmmal.so" related error and I don't think there is a workaround for that rather than rewriting some of the source code. This issue is caused by the recent camera updates published by Raspberry (see the announcement).
Good news is I was able to surmount (well, avoid) this issue by installing Raspberry Pi OS 32-bit (Debian Buster) and picoastal works that way as expected.
