Xarray backend to map an ECMWF style request to a service onto an Xarray Dataset

This Open Source project is build by B-Open - https://www.bopen.eu

Features and limitations

xarray-ecmwf is a Python library and Xarray backend with the following functionalities:

  • opens an ECMWF style request as a Xarray Dataset connected to the remote services
  • allows lazy loading the data and well integrated with Dask and Dask.distributed
  • allows chunking the input request according to a configurable splitting strategy. Allowed strategies:
    • by one month
    • by one day
  • supports requests returning a single GRIB file, via cfgrib

Usage

>>> import xarray as xr
>>> request = {
...     "dataset": "reanalysis-era5-single-levels",
...     "product_type": "reanalysis",
...     "variable": ["2m_temperature"],
...     "year": ["2002"],
...     "month": ["01"],
...     "day": ["15"],
...     "time": ["00:00", "12:00"],
... }
>>> ds = xr.open_dataset(request, engine="ecmwf")
>>> ds
<xarray.Dataset>
