Possible to use python from a conda/mamba environment with rye (instead of rye Python)?

I then created a rye project, installed a pip package with rye, created a mamba environment containing Python, and tried to import the rye package but unfortunately it doesn't seem to work:

$ rye init project
success: Initialized project in ~/git/project
  Run `rye sync` to get started

$ cd ~/git/project

$ rye add numpy
Added numpy>=2.0.0 as regular dependency
... # truncated output, but it is successful

$ mamba create -n project python=3.12.3
... # truncated output, but it is successful

$ mamba activate project

(project) $ which python
~/mambaforge/envs/project/bin/python

(project) $ python
Python 3.12.3 | packaged by conda-forge | (main, Apr 15 2024, 18:38:13) [GCC 12.3.0] on linux
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> import numpy
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'numpy

When installing rye, I selected the option ❯ Run the old default Python (provided by your OS, pyenv, etc.) and thought this might help. Essentially I'm trying install some extra C libraries that I can do with mamba, but want to use rye for managing my python project.
