Generate elevation lines for the whole world

We should generate contour lines for the world. Our current example takes a small geotiff and saves the resulting contours in postgis. So far, we havn't been able to generate contours for the whole world using this approach. A possibility may be to split the world into smaller areas and then to merge the lines that touch each others.
