How can I add an object custom field to an issue?

In absence of #642 being merged, I'm trying to submit an issue with affects-version\s as a custom field. However, the field type is an array of version and when I try to provide that as a custom field, the server rejects it because the version I provide isn't an object. I couldn't find anything in the documentation about how to structure this sort of field - have I missed something, or is this just not possible?
