dbf file locked for reading

When I go to read a dbf file, it may be blocked by the application that owns it.
When this happens the library keeps trying to read endlessly and you have to cancel the dbf reading process.
Is there a way to force the dbf file to be read or for the library to return an error after a timeout without reading any data?

Cuando voy a leer un fichero dbf puede que este esté bloqueado por la aplicación propietaria del mismo.
Cuando esto ocurre se queda la libreria intentando leer de forma interminable y hay que darle a cancelar al proceso de lectura del dbf.
¿Hay alguna forma de forzar la lectura del fichero dbf o que la librería devuelva un error pasado un timeout sin leer ningún dato?
